Home modifications are done to make homes easier to access for people living there. Ideally, they are tailored to an individual's needs.

On this page you will find resources on home modifications. At the bottom of the page, you will also find two tools with which to share your stories and your questions.

Home modifications can be complex, so it's crucial for people receiving them to have as much information as possible about:

  • What home modifications are
  • What to expect during the process
  • How to recognise whether a modification has been done properly or not.

What we have heard

Through the Opening the Door project we have heard of a number of key issues with home modifications:

  • Difficulty of getting modifications in private rental properties - landlords and the NDIS are reluctant to fund.
  • Unwillingness of NDIA to fund modifications in public housing.
  • Problems with managing construction work, such as complex home modifications.
  • People receiving NDIS support are often charged higher prices for modifications compared to those who don't receive NDIS support.
  • The work is not being completed satisfactorily or in line with the agreed-upon design and scope.
